Shimano Redefines Cycling Comfort with Science-Driven Bib Shorts Design

Shimano, a leading manufacturer of high-performance cycling components and equipment, is transforming rider comfort with a new approach to the design of its bib shorts. Combining scientific precision with real-world cycling insights, the crucial point of contact between rider and saddle, has been redefined.
Where Bib Design Meets Data
In collaboration with bikefitting.com, Shimano has developed a method to test and design bib shorts using a customized data-driven processes, allowing for the collection of data from thousands of bike fittings. By using standardized bike setups, each fitting reveals valuable data about positioning and pressure points, which Shimano’s Apparel and Accessories team use to create a bib short that feels unique. Combined with their knowledge of pads, materials, fit and usage and leveraging bikefitting.com’s expertise in rider positioning and pressure points, Shimano now ensures a more accurate and effective bib short fit.
With this collaboration, we’re able to use a standard bike set-up to test the first impression of a lot of different (bib) shorts,” explains Shimano Product Developer, Katlijn Engelberts. “This extra input helps us get more consistent data, because external factors like the bike, the saddle, weather, and riding conditions are taken out of the equation during this testing phase.”
Shimano’s dual-phased approach combines indoor testing and outdoor evaluations.
Indoors, test riders provide immediate feedback while other objective measurements pinpoint critical adjustments, where every seam, every panel and millimeter of material can be measured, including the thickness of the all-important chamois.
Outdoors, riders participate in extensive testing across multiple scenarios, including endurance rides, high-intensity efforts, and relaxed spins, ensuring the bib shorts perform under all conditions. With so many variables that can influence the outcome, using these two different approaches Shimano combines the best qualitative and quantitative data.
With this approach, we can achieve a next-level fitting experience,” added Engelberts. “We can design, develop and create the ideal bib short more effectively through science.”
